Ahhh.... little Britain.
What's it got to do with Britain?
The name of the road actually refers to a small insular district of London. The whole district was called Little Britain. It was pretty much enclosed by the walls of Bartholamew's Hospital and a number of roads in the area.
It lay outside the boundaries of the City of London - Dickens described the area as "a cluster of narrow streets and courts, of very venerable and debilitated."
What else happened here?
In the 16th century, Little Britain was a hub for bookselling.
